Three Data Modem issues… more news!

Posted by FrankP

I sent an email to Rachel Channing, Head of PR & Communications for Three Ireland who was on Today FM yesterday (email found on a press release), outlining the issues I have been experiencing and explaining that I have to consider returning the modem while I am withing my 14 day no quibble money back guarantee period. I asked if the issues were likely to be resolved and, if so, whether my no quibble guarantee could be extended to cover the time it would take.

Here are the problems I outlined:

  1. Speed issues themselves are not fixed - I frequently nose dive to a fraction of the advertised speed and I NEVER get above 1MBPS.
  2. I frequently need to restart my computer to try to get the modem recognised. Others have reported this issue too. The modem almost never works on the first startup of my machine.
  3. I cannot FTP.
  4. As my ISP I would expect Three to provide SMTP servers. They do not.
  5. I cannot email using other SMTP servers as it would appear that due to the configuration of you handling of IP addresses my IP is ALWAYS black listed.
  6. Gmail and other sites simply don’t work.
  7. Forms on websites frequently don’t work. particularly those that involve an upload of any kind.

Rachel responded promptly and offered to personally take responsibility to ensure I could return the modem in the next few weeks if the issues are not sorted out. She explained that every effort is being made to sort out the issues.

I am impressed at her offer and her prompt reply, so now we will have to wait and see how the next few weeks pan out!

    Hi there,
I bought a 3 USB Modem to use while working on client sites. Initially,I had some very bad problems - it would work, then Modem would become invalid, etc. Anyway, I got in touch with helpdesk, then with a guy in the UK, who spend 2 hours (8pm to 10pm) working with me to help find the problem. While we didn’t find it that evening, I did eventually find the problem. (Using MSCONFIG to selectively enable / disable startup processes and services)

My (New) Sony Laptop came with an unwanted piece of junk software called Norton Save and Restore. Every time the laptop started up, this thing would also start. Whenever it did, it clobbered the software stack installed by the 3 Modem. (Virtual CD Drive, Virtual COM Port)

I assume that Norton was doing some kind of scan of all installed “Disk” type devices, and upon encountering the 3 Virtual CD Driver, caused it to fail. Anyway, I removed the “Try and Buy” Norton stuff, and it has behaved perfectly since.

That is not to say that I am happy with it. I, like everyone else, cannot use outgoing mail servers, because of the Spam blacklisting problems.

    Come on 3, fix it.

    Best,
    Con Cunningham

  4. How I solved all my 3 (Three) Wireless Data Modem problems… » Aonach Consulting Says:

[...] I was beyond my 14 day money back guarantee, but as I posted previously, I was lucky enough to deal with someone in Three who gives a damn. It’s pretty hard to find someone like that in Three from what I can tell, but I found this person to be extemely helpful, accommodating and willing to engage. [...]

Con, I highly recommend taking it back and demanding a refund, that’s what I did and I have reduced the stress in my life significantly!!!

If you can find ANY alternative, you should try it out. The Three modem is not worth the hassle. it’s a lovely idea, but it’s not ready for the real world of internet usage.

I purchased a 3 HSDPA Ddata Modem in August 07. This is now working ok , internet and emails through Outlook Express (though only at a fraction of the speed advertised). Emails was made possible after an hour on the phone to the support centre.
I paid €179 euro to the retailer. This amount included the purchase price of €129 euro, plus a deposit of €50 euro, of which I was told to ask for repayment after a few months. I do not understand why I had to pay the deposit, which I must now try to get refunded. Recently the email addresses (mailto:customer.services.ie@3mail.com) refused to take my emails. Does some know the correct email address.
