Thats odd, does the status light on the modem stay constantly on even when you can't access webpages? If it does its more likely a problem with your browser, or possibly your system has been infected. My solution would be to clear the browser cache - delete internet history, cookies and so on, if that doesn't work try using Firefox(if you're not already!), and failing that run a boot time scan with you anti virus, it wouldn't be any harm downloading Spybot-Search& Destroy either, give that a run out too.

But all the above is only if the modem and its associated program indicate the the connection is still working. If it is a problem with the modem your ISP should have a pretty decent phone support service by now. Good luck with it!

There is also another option regarding routers, there are several routers available now that not only take rj-45's (ethernet cables), but they take usb modems such as the 3 datamodems as well. One of my friends has one if these now, he leaves it in the attic with the modem and runs a wireless network throughout his home. He's delighted with it, and hasn't had any problems with it (so far!).

It cost him around €100 from a website, can't remember which one, but I'm sure if you check dabs.ie or komplett you'll track one down....

I don't think 3 are blocking anything - I have even managed to VPN over my 3 connection though speed-wise it wasn't spectacular.

The main problem you have is using ICS which is a pretty flakey way of sharing your internet connection at the best of times.

You have 3 basic options,
1. Get gateway software that runs on Windows like Kerio Winroute which is basically a software based router.
2. Scrap your XP installation (after backing up what you want to keep of course) and put a linux distribution like Ubuntu on that machine and use IPTABLES to share your connection - lots of tutorials online for doing this and networking to the rest of your network.
3. Buy a broadband router that will take your SIM and essentially replace your modem and act as a router. These 3g gateways don't tend to come cheap though the price of them is coming down.

I think 2 would be my personal preference - especially if the PC is always on.

Hi Everyone;) I got the E160g Modem from 3 and so far its not to bad, Granted, i have it in my attic three stories up and connected to an always on computer that i control through VNC so i'm pretty much HSDPA3 all the time. The problem i'm having is that i,ve enabled ICS through the windows xp machine the modem is connected to but i cant seem to use any p2p progs successfully. Are 3 blocking the ports from there end or am i doing something wrong? please HELP!

Guys, 3UK has come with the SMTP relay server. Getting correct outgoing mail server address from them will help u send mails. ( for UK customers).

Outgoing mail server : smtp-mbb.three.co.uk

If that doesnot work u may go to advanced/more settings and configure outgoing mail port to 25 with authentcation required unticked.

I am in England and had nothing but problems using outlook and constant BS from the support team who initially admitted they did not have a server to use outlook then in floowing calls blamed my provider. I was just about to bin them when I saw the authsmtp suggestion here and it works. Finally I can send and receive emails vis outlook when on the road.

Andrew Bellamy I owe you many thanks for this suggestion.
