3 (Three) Wireless Broadband Data Modem - the saga continues.

Posted by FrankP

Out of the blue I got a call from technical support - it was a callback I was expecting about a week ago I think! Anyway, they were very professional and helpful, and pleasant to deal with. However, they weren’t able to answer many questions on my issues, but they are going to look into some of them and get back to me.

Firstly, they explained to me that the USB modem creates a virtual CD drive when it’s plugged into the computer, and any software that interacts with the CD drive nomrally can cause conflicts. Seems crazy to me, but there you go.

They said also that as well as Napster and some of the other common software that can cause conflicts, the Dell Support service can cause issues, and something called Cyberlink (which I don’t seem to have) can cause issues. Disabling Dell Support on start up by disabling DSAgnt in the system configuration utility should help they said. I haven’t tried it yet, as I am online right now and loathe to have to restart and take my chances again… update - tried this today to no avail. Started with DSAgnt disabled and got ‘modem invalid’ and lots of unstable mounting/dismounting. A restart after enabling DSAgnt again and I got up and running.

They said FTP should be working fine, and they tested it at their location and said it was… I still can’t FTP though. Has anyone in ireland been able to FTP?

There is a known issue with Three’s SMTP server, which is interesting because I was told on previous calls that there was no SMTP server. It’s smtp.3ireland.ie apparently - however it’s not working right now, so that’s useless information really.

They also told me that an IP conflict issue which was stopping access to sites like Gmail should now be resolved.

Other information gleaned is that there seems to be just one IP address. Is that normal? They seemed to think that’s how all mobile broadband operators work, the guy I spoke to was in the UK, roaming with an Irish 3 Wireless Broadband Data Modem and he had the same IP address as I have. This would seem problematic to me. Anyone have any input on that?

The USB thingy acting as a (virtual) CD is the only reliable way to make the USB modem run a program on inserting. On some computers the ‘autorun’ function is working, but ’some’ is not reliable.

I myself am testing the O2 broadband at the moment, which uses the same USB modem, the Huawei E220, as do other providers. It works, but not great. The speed is only 10% of the promised 2.5Mbps (on the website they promise 3.6Mbps, but the guy in the O2 shop was a bit more realistic, but not realistic enough, it seems).

So maybe I should switch to 3, as they charge only half the price of O2 and according to the 3 coverage map I’m covered.

if the ip address you are referring to begins with 10.***.***.***
this is a private ip address not visible to the internet
it is the interface between your PC and the modem

if the ip address you are referring to begins with
    193.120.***.***
    check it here http://whatsmyip.org/
this is your actual connection and it would be quite impossible for 2 computers with separate connections to the internet to simultaneously have identical ip addreses

as of now Tuesday 21 August @ 19:53

    FTP does not work

    SMTP does not work
    smtp.mail.yahoo.co.uk or mail.mywebsite.net
Both worked in early august with 3 wireless broadband modem but not now.

these 2 mailservers are not down because they work perfectly through dial-up

i can now access Gmail website

    POP3 access does work fine

both FTP and SMTP are capable of uploading large amounts of data.

it is possible that 3 are restricting these protocols to conserve their dismal upload speeds.

tech support promsed to phone me after i went to the trouble of visiting the carphone warehouse where i bought the modem, to demonstrate the problem……………they never bothered………….liars

i spoke to a networking wizard and explained that i could send blank emails via SMTP but if there was even a few words in the body of the message, it would not send

he thinks they have “throttled” access to port 21 and 25 to restrict bandwidth
my reply was that they have choked the living sh** out of it

    i’m fed up with them

  3. FrankP Says:

Dave, some more info here now - they are using NAT which results in one single public IP address from what I understand.

So that IP address gets blacklisted and I can’t send mail through my usual smtp servers - and Three don’t have an SMTP server which they allow me to use.

It’s incredible, though, the bullcrap that is being fed to us by Three. If you read the thread on boards.ie you’ll see an amazing amount of stories and fairytales being bandied about, all fed to us by Three to try to keep us believing everything is ok..

There are fundamental issues with the way Three have set this up it would seem… I’m not technical enough to know exactly what they are, but it’s obvious they screwed this up fairly bad.

Who knows how fixable it is, especially since there is very little visibility of anyone who knows what they are doing.

I really want it to work, but I have to consider taking it back… I was given a few weeks grace by Three to make my decision but there has been no progress made on the core issues yet.

  4. Dave Says:

    ok i forgot about NAT

but my ip address changes daily
    in the range
    193.120.116.178
    to
    193.120.116.199

and thats at least 21 ip addresses

that allocation has 255 ip addresses which is possibly just for a single mobile network “Cell”

check out the allocation at http://www.dnsstuff.com
enter the ip address in the
    WHOIS Lookup
    box

but if it is NAT, its like i said ………… a scaled down internet service suitable only for web surfers

does anybody know if vodafone customers are experiencing the issues that are causing us so much grief

if not, i will definitely switch and the 18 month contract and slightly extra cost will not bother me in any way

keep the comments coming in guys, this is very valuable.

heres my update as of thursday morning at 03:42

ms channing of 3ireland has still not responded to my email

3ireland tech support have still not called me a week after i personally called in to carephone warehouse with my notebook PC and demonstrated the problem to the fairly knowlegable sales assistant. the promised to return my call within 6 hours.

FTP still not working (have tried passive mode also)
connects and authenticates ok……but times out

SMTP not working………..it connects and authenticates but times out

i cannot view the boards.ie thread about modem problems
    keep getting this error:

    Network Error (tcp_error)
A communication error occurred: “Operation timed out”
The Web Server may be down, too busy, or experiencing other problems preventing it from responding to requests. You may wish to try again at a later time.
For assistance, contact your network support team

i was getting this message on the gmail website until recently but gmail is ok now

so this message is generated by 3ireland and not the requested website

maybe they should rewrite the message to read as follows

    Network Error (we are assholes)
A communication error occurred: “Operation timed out”
The Web Server is not down, too busy, or experiencing other problems preventing it from responding to requests.

We don’t care how long it takes to fix and we will keep you in the dark every step of the way. don’t send emails to ms channing Head of PR, cos she doesn’t give a damn and can’t send emails either cos our SMTP server is buggered and she hates webmail.
You may wish to try again at a later time. (we don’t care)

and if you are trying to view boards.ie, don’t bother as we have blocked it cos we don’t like whats written about us

For assistance, contact your network support team
(but don’t be surprised if a bloke with an asian accent who is actually customer service and not tech support fobs you off with lies)
forget http://FTP…….this is not real internet connectivity

if a message like this was displayed, then i would have more respect for 3ireland

3 ‘Tech Support’ just informed me that MS Outlook is not compatible with 3 Ireland services at this time! Charming, what do I do now?

  7. Willem Says:

At least you can get one month free (see their website):

    Service update

We are continuing work on FTP access, VPN, NetMeeting and certain streaming sites and expect to have a fix in place soon. Microsoft Outlook is not currently compatible with3’s service, however all mainstream web-based emails are working normally.

We are offering 3DataModem and 3Datacard customers one month’s free line rental in recognition of the inconvenience caused by the network upgrade. For more information call 083 333 3333.

  8. Marco Says:

    Hi !

I just got the three usb modem. Surfing sites is fast, but both SMTP and FTP are stuck. FTP loose the control connection probably.

    Marco.

  9. kalli Says:

smtp will never work the way they have it set up at the moment.
this network wizard is absolutely right. basically what happens is that the smtp handshake runs absolutely fine. helo, mail from and rcpt to. then the client sends the data command, to which it gets the response to send data now. all fine. then client sends the mailbody. not a single tcp packet from the mailbody is confirmed by the mailserver, as if it’s filter by 3 irteland. the server sends a few acknoledgements to the last packets before data. so the TCP window of the client runs full. As the mailserver receives no data, they reacknowledge the last packet received and client resends. it just depends on the mailserver when it will timeout as it never receives a single tcp packet after data command.
i have packet captures to prove it but 3ireland doesn’t want to see them. it sounds technical knowledge scares the sh1t out of them.
i even offered that they can have the packet captures and I don’t expect action or follow up. just for their info. no. they don’t want it. they discussed with L2 and they refused to talk to me.

oh and hey say: we don’t support smtp. when I bought my usb dongle it worked fine, so i was happy out. then they changed their own data provider and now we’re screwed.

i hold certifications in networking (CCNA) and in wireshark packet analysis, so I guess I know what i’m talking about

  10. Willie kavanagh Says:

Bought mine in Communicate now in Carlow. The girl explained to me that the server was being upgraded and that from Saturday (2 weeks ago) I would be running at 3.6 Mps. Such rubbish. Called in the other day same girl had developed an attitude. I would need to bring in the modem with the original packaging and original receipt so that they could test it. Then they would have to send it away so that it could be tested. And no, no replacement modem; I would have to wait a week at least for the results. When I passed the comment that that was in complete contradiction to what she told me two weeks previously, she simply said that that was just the way it was. A product of one of the cheaper charm schools I imagine.

I have it working under Linux, XP and OSX, I can use gmail and Thunderbird Retrieves mails from Oceanfree and Utvinternet. When I try sending mail using Oceanfree as default I get the message that 193.120.111.183 is blacklisted by Spamblock. Not the usual message for that situation. It’s faster than dialup - almost.

  11. FrankP Says:

Thanks for stopping in guys - i reached the end of my tether and took the modem back and got a full refund. I was beyond my 14 day guarantee, but I still got the refund. I think everyone should take it back and demand same.

  12. Jimmy Says:

I’ve recently come across the ‘Data Modem Invalid’ problem on a clients Laptop. The cause was a conflict with the built-in Blue Tooth function. Blue Tooth creates virtual COM ports (12, I think). 3 Networks Modem also creates a virtual COM port, and these conflicted. In this caes my Customer did not use Blue Tooth and disabling it gave reliable operation of the 3 Networks Modem. It’s not a solution, I know, but the workaround worked. Maybe someone knows to avoid the COM port conflict?

  13. peter ross Says:

you are lucky in dealing with 3ireland as i have spent 14hrs trying to resolve draining my credit on packet data and promising to return my calls, seems to be company policy to give them the runaround and they will disappear and we make more profit

  14. Chaz Says:

I got this last week and gave it back today

EVERY SINGLE thing that went wrong for you guys in August went wrong for me too ( in Galway)

This is the most disgusting piece of dysfunctional crap I ever bought , well apart from an Alba CD player I once got .

  15. foggy_lad Says:

willie i wouldn’t expect any other response from that store in fairgreen or their one at superquin! demand a refund as they have not lived up yo promises made at time of purchase!

    hello all,
iam moving house at the moment - i need to setup me BB iam with imagine at the mo but dont like paying the line rental fee 25euro.

are these data modems worth getting?
what speed are ya really getting?
any other catches? whats the monthly cost? is their download limits?
whos the best provider? can you download torrents?

  17. Mickrua Says:

It seems that 3 were in too much hurry and launchd the system on the cheap without prior extensive testing.I tried them but had enough in one day and got my money back.I was instructed to uninstall most drivers to get the 3 software working.Obviously they did not employ the Nerds to collaborate with Microsoft and go through the Windows operating system to iron out any “Compatibility Problems” which may/could possibly arise.
Trying out a different supplier soon.

  18. Strotos Says:

Lads…..I was going to get this “3 Mobile Broadband” tomorrow as i am always on the move and i thought that it would be very handy…but after reading all your posts..there is no f****** way I’m going to even bother….

Thanks for all your posts, I’m sure they have saved from throwing my laptop out the window :)

  19. Dave Says:

I have had the 3 broadband modem for 3 days now and have had to move my room round to get a half decent signal which still only gives me at very very best middle of the night when the network is quiet 100 - 120Kbps, but during the day it averages about 50-60Kbps even connected to the TURBO service with full bar signal, I can`t get a land line in so i`m stuck with it, but slow net is better than no net I suppose

  20. Cara Says:

Hey guys, does anyone have any experience with using this service in London? Is everyone pretty much Ireland based in this discussion?

I’ve just got the three mobile broadband and I’m having problems with the http://FTP. It starts fine but seems to drop out after a while. Anyone got any ideas?

Also, when I try to synchronise my computer using vpn and a synchronise program it gets about half way through before stalling. It still shows me as connected to the 3 modem however it’s showing a sent speed of 0.0kbps and a receive speed of 0.2kbps and the progress % (in the synch progress) stops moving up. What is going wrong here?

I really want to get this thing working! Sounds like they’ve got quite a few issues with the system though.

    Thanks!

Bought a 3 modem from carphone warehouse , maynooth , plugged in and ran “ok” for about 10hrs then no signal at all from friday 9pm to 6pm saturday even though in blue area on coverage map , constantly ran on 3g about 60-70 kbps not impressed at all , if i was on ebay or booking flights it seems to shut down due to signal lost .
bringing it back to the store asap as i’m within the 14 day trial period and swapping to O2 despite the extra cost , old saying of you pay for what you get .wish i’d found this website sooner to see other peoples misery with them , never again will i buy anything from 3 .

    Hello all.
I use 3 mobile broadband via a MF622 FTE usb modem and I must say that my everage download speed is 156.2KB. I use AnalogX NetStat Live to measure my speeds.

I collect my email via virgin.net and send my email via Gmail. Doing it this way means that I can send and receieve my email on any broadband, dialup or O2 or Three mobile broadband services.

Using Google to relay my outgoing emails is great and the people receiving my email only see my person email address and not my gmail email address :-) GREAT.

    Google settings are as follows.

Incoming Mail (POP3) Server - requires SSL:
    P.S. Enable POP in Gmail
    pop.gmail.com
    Use SSL: Yes
    Port: 995
    ———————————————————–
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server - requires TLS
    smtp.gmail.com
    Use Authentication: Yes
Use STARTTLS: Yes (some clients call this SSL)
    Port: 465 or 587
    ———————————————————–
Email Address: Your from email address (username@domain.com)
Account Name: Your Gmail username (username@gmail.com)
    Password: Your Gmail password
    ———————————————————–

    Thats it :-)

    Enjoy (Da Man)

    Three shared IP address:

Turns out that David is right. Three network are pooling IP addresses using NAT so it is common that more than one customer is online with the same IP address at the one time.

I found this out when playing poker on Paddy Power Poker which would not let me register for tournaments as my IP address was already being used for the same tournament (anti-collusion policy)

So far I have had IP addresses 193.120.116.178 & 193.120.116.177 (same as someone else above)

  25. Philip Says:

Hi all , great reading this stuff , I have just bought the uk 3modem £15 pcm 3 gb = package at CPW Blackburn, tested my likely use in London, Penrith Preston and Darwen , - quality good to great.

Then I try the email and of course discover what you guys (n gals) have found - However am using a work around - working with tiscali web based mail (a great client with full functionality ) have asked the UK 3 tech team the same question you have all rehearsed - watch this space .

I wonder how vodaphone and t mobile get round this course over here they use the same modem kit . Well at least I can can a fancy sticker (see 3 site) to cover my modem . Ho ho !!!

All my love to Galway and Ms Flood and the Psych team !
    Phil

  26. Kumar Says:

Hi, am currently using the three modem in London with no ftp or smpt problems at all but am currently trying the resolve the issue with nat as have bought this modem for use with an xbox360; which the sales assisstant said that it works well with. I am able to connect but once the game starts it just freezes after a few seconds, does anybody else have similar problems or has anyone found a solution to this??

  27. Ollie Says:

I’m london based. NOticed in the last few weeks that outgong mail only works via smtp.three.co.uk which means it is all stamped as user@3mail.com - not ideal when i’m sending business emails.

spoke to three usb support (08707 330320) who tried to fob me off as an idiot with some lame explanations. After asking some specific technical questinos he cameclean and said that three have blocked the use of external smtp servers and that their own smtp.three.co.uk typically doesnt work either. HE told me to use webmail. So the three strategy is obviously to provide (web)mail access only. Fantastic.

Taking it back tomorrow. Not fit for purpose, false advertising.

  30. Richard Says:

Still did not get the 3 modem to run on Windows Vista. Everybody in technical support seems to have a different “solution” which seems to involve disabling / deinstalling every piece of software on the system. I have got different drivers from 3 which all have one thing in common, they do not work. I had a XP machine before and experienced no problems. I live in Tullamore and had a rather bad connectivity anyway (max. 126kbs, usually 68kbs or less). If anyone would like to get a 3 modem, I can only recommend checking out any other option open to you before using this.
I have tried a Vodafone modem (same model) and it worked first time around.

  31. Paul Walsh Says:

    Hello all,

I came across this when I was trying to find a suitable mobile wireless broadband provider.

You are all right about the issues described, have a look at tom rafferty’s website (http://www.tomrafteryit.net/) , who discusses this as well. There are of course plently of comments from other dissatisfied people.

I for one am very disappointed after reading the problems described by so many people. The reason for this is , that it is not that difficult to setup and maintain a network (provided you know what you are doing). I should know as for myself I am network security professional.

A friend of mine came back from completing a contract for a city in the USA (he was to build a wireless MAN), and he was “gobsmacked” when we discussed wireless broadband and the problems with 3G and O2.

I cannot discuss Vodapone mobile broadband as I have no experience of it, but if I were a betting man I would also tar it with the same brush as O2 and 3, unless proved otherwise.

Personally I cannot understand why they continue to offer the service (if you can call it service!), instead of just stopping it for say a month to iron out the network issues and then relaunch it.

We sell products on our website, and we ensure that every customer gets exactly what they expect , and most importantly, that they are happy. In fact we have live chat at no charge on our website where potential and existing clients can talk to us at no charge, we are they only company of our type to do that.

Why cannot REGCOM or REGTEL or whatever they are called, not step in and stop 3 or O2 on the basis of “false advertising”? Or have they no balls?

If anyone is interested in investing capital into setting up a proper wireless broadband, perhaps get in touch with me , at the rate we are going, it will be years before 3 and O2, if ever get their act together…

  32. Smooth Says:

Ive used it in Nottingham since last October and the speeds are excellent, very occasionally i only get GPRS which is so slow Google doesnt load up after 3 minutes wait. But the vast majority of the time its been great.

One problem i have, uTorrent won’t download anything. on the speed settings it mentions opening ports on the router but 3 broadband doesnt use a router so what do i do?

  33. Paul Walsh Says:

    To : smooth

If you managed to get it working in Nottingham…well then well done.

    I smell a 3 employee here commenting…

About uTorrent not working ..well there is absolutly no point trying to get anything downloaded on 3’s network , as torrents are blocked. No point in opening ports at a router, because as you stated, the 3 modem is exactly that, a modem, not a router. YOu would literly need to have physical access to the network operation center for whatever node you are using the wireless on. Bascially there is nothing you can do.

  34. nbrado Says:

I fixed this issue it seems to be with permissions set in the registry.

    open your registry editor.

    start>run>regedit

    navigate to
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    SYSTEM
    CONTROLSET001
    ENUM
    USB

    Then look for VID_12d1&Pid_1003
set folder permissions for ALL users to full control

    next one down look for
    VID_12d1&pid_1003&MI_00
again set the folder permissions for ALL users to full control

    Close regedit.

    restart computer.

    plug in 3 modem
start application, even if it sez INVALID modem wait a moment should then appear.

    did for me.

hope this helps you guys out

  35. Oliver Says:

Hi All - I posted here previously about not being able to send mail via SMTP servers / outlook using the 3 UBS Modem.

After 1.5hrs on the phone, having had my issue escalated to 3 supervisors, i was told i’d receive a call back from another manager. To my suprise this did actually happen and 3 DOES allow the use of SMTP severs.

All you have to do is go the the Tools > Account Settings > (Select your email) > Advanced > Outgoing Mail Server and turn on ‘requires authentication’ and enter your email and password for the email account.

I can now send and receive email via outlook with it coming from a three account. If it was this simple why couldnt the dedicated 3 Mobile support team give me this answer weeks ago!?

Hope this works for you guys / gals

  36. kalli Says:

the problems with SMTP/POP3 are long gone. They were existent at the time of posting.
It wen’t from no-go, to hickup, to go
    all with the same config.
As mentioned I proved my point back then in packet captures that the endpoint wasn’t seein any traffic after smtpdata session.
As mentioned I haven’t had the problem for the last 2 months.
At the same time the speed has a little improved. Nowhere near the 3.6 they advertise, but I actually am now abkle to slowly brose websites without constant dropouts.
The fact that we’re sitting in a private network doesn’t really help matters as they block down whatever is possible.
I have no other option, so I grin and bear it

  37. Paul Walsh Says:

    Kalli:

Yeah, but you should not have to grin and bear it.

Somone was goin on about how 3 was going to roll-out 7.2 mb service but as i said whats the point in offering that speed if they cannot even get a paltry 3.2mb service right?

  38. Frank S Says:

I have just installed a 3 Mobile Broadband modem. I live in Rochdale. Reception is fine and I get 3.6 speed all the time. This is great for using the web BUT I can’t send e-mails or use http://ftp.
I spoke to 3 Mobile Broadband Technical guy who gave the story about using smtp.three.co.uk. It does NOT work. Still waiting for a follow up call back!
My son is in the mobile phone business and knows people at 3. He spoke to a contact who told him that basically they have a solution to the outgoing mail and ftp problem but it still has to be “signed off”.
You may be able to use some alternative ISP but which ones?

  39. Frank S Says:

I have now set up an alternative e-mail account at dsl.pipex.com

This allows me to send emails via the 3 Modem provided you set the Outgoing Mail Authentication tro ON and select it to use your pipex identificastion and password to sign you in.

Problem with that is that you seem to have to send e-mails using your pipex address. A nuisance adding yet another e-mail address!

  40. tortellini Says:

same problem here in italy. smtp.tre.it was working fine (was relaying, as long I was connected via TRE italia with my adsm modem.

but now, its not working anymore. i was told, that this smtp server works ONLY, if you authentificate with your phonenumber and pin… which again… works only if you use the three mail adress.

port 25 seems to be locked.

does anybody know a relaying and free smtp server NOT running on port 25?

  41. Damien Says:

Anyone want to buy an 3 Datamodem? LMFAO!!!
    Stupid 3 Ireland, Communists

  42. Frank S Says:

I was wrong when I said that I could only send e-mails using my dsl.pipex.com address. Using my usual e-mail address I can send e-mails provided that the outgoing smtp server is set to dsl.pipex.com and the connection is authenticated with the correct user name and password.

Three (UK) now admit that they have a problem. Their smtp server is for use by mobile phone cutomers only and not for broadband customers. What you need is an ISP which allows “smtp forwarding”. Enter this into Google to find a listing but it is a very short list.

I fixed this issue it seems to be with permissions set in the registry.

    open your registry editor.

    start>run>regedit

    navigate to
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    SYSTEM
    CONTROLSET001
    ENUM
    USB

    Then look for VID_12d1&Pid_1003
set folder permissions for ALL users to full control

    next one down look for
    VID_12d1&pid_1003&MI_00
again set the folder permissions for ALL users to full control

    Close regedit.

    restart computer.

    plug in 3 modem
start application, even if it sez INVALID modem wait a moment should then appear.

    did for me.

hope this helps you guys out’.

What does this sort out? Torrents or compatability issues?

Let Hutchison 3G Ireland Ltd RIP you OFF
I have been in touch with the very pleasant and polite staff on the other side of the world again. This time I did not bother to ask if there is something I should be doing to speed up my 3 wireless pay as you go connection, I figured this would be futile. There is nothing the polite staff can do about the RIP / OFF company, who are based in Dublin with a PO box no, no e-mail address, no phone number for contact how handy this is to avoid a service that is second to all. You can call the other side of the world for customer care for free. I will assume the polite employees are paid a pittance for listening to the repetition day in day out. This company is called,
    3 Customer Services,
    Hutchison 3G Ireland Ltd,
    PO Box 333,
    Dublin 2.

Is a normal N95 with a standard non broadband sim capable of getting faster downspeed than 700kps?

The 3 (Three) guys in India stated that the speeds available from a stock N95 with normal sim should be the same as the what is on offer using a USB modem, but on Ebay the sims are sold as either broadband or basic voice sims, contradicting what Three technical support say.

The Three sales people in the shops also say they get good service of 3.6mbs all the time using a N95 with a voice sim and that broadband sims can not be bought alone, even though they are for sale on Ebay.

    Who is telling the truth???
The teachnical guys in India, the guys on Ebay or the guys actually selling the phones on the high street? (who probably know the least!)

    3G Rip Off!!!!!!
I was misold a broadband USB and “Phone package” I don’t use the phone and never did. I was told I could cancel…….I’m so pissed off I can’t even type it…

The usb does not work cross border even though the sales gut said it would.

When you cross borders ( Ireland ) you can’t talk with anyone that can help. One side says call UK 3….the other says call Ireland 3….no one can help…

They keep me on hold, passing me through one person to the next always asking for the same information every time they pass me to somone else.

Every phone call has been over 30 mins and is costing me a fortune on my home phone.

Customer service is incompetent and has the stance that we as consumer should just pay their bills and stop complaining.

DON’T GO NEAR 3G…3G RIP OFF, SCAM, WASTE OF MONEY < >

Hi in the UK same mixed story . 3 sell this aggressively as a mobile BB solution - errr….

But better than tales of (friends) other mobile providers T, 02 vodaphone same dongle rubbish connection. They are all talking up there products …. so desperate to obtain market share.

When it works (3) it works well ie if you get a good 3 or 2 G signal. Some areas abysmal and unexpected eg. middle of Birmingham .

My son used my lap top on a motorway journey for 300 mls and uninterrupted signal watching BBC I player and playing online games (mac laptop). Great in Lancashire rubbish in bits of London . I move around the country for work .

I use Google mail as a work around - complete satisfaction with this product and means you keep existing email addys. You can maintain (if you want ) client based records ie mirror of emails or just use Google . Helps me to be more disciplined about removing mail . It works fine and I am so impressed Ive migrated to using on-line email client and other features cal , documents.

I have found 3 customer service to be rubbish they try hard but have no idea ! But great discussions about cricket and weather in India !

As a business/ personal product I rate it 4/10 but I want it to be 8/10 so am badgering 3 for improved performance. Also letting Charles Dunstone into the story as he is keen on good products and informed customers (CPW CEO). See http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/commerce/servlet/gben-server-PageServer?article=MAIN.UK.INTERNET.HELPINFO.COMPINFO.CEO

Ive not tried VOIP on it yet but thats a next stage ? Anyone got any experience of this ?

Hope this helps - I was going to send mine back to Car phone warehouse but am sticking with it …. heres hoping .

    Phil
